Radio Station supports Hunger-Free Holidays

United Against Poverty (UP Centers) of Indian River and St. Lucie counties and 93.7 FM WGYL and 97.1 Ocean FM are partnering for the annual Hunger-Free Holidays Radiothon, sponsored by Mid Florida Credit Union. On Nov. 3, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., live broadcasts raise awareness of the needs of low income families, as well as the services available during the holiday season and throughout the year. Programs inspire and empower people living in poverty to lift themselves and their families to self sufficiency and include crisis stabilization, a member share grocery program, life skills workshops and Success Training for Employment Program (STEP). Community support and fundraising support makes services possible. “Many families along the Treasure Coast, struggle to make ends meet. The holidays are no exception,” Karen Franke, station manager. “We support the UP Centers because they are a beacon of hope with long-term solutions to address the root causes of poverty  to break the cycle of poverty.” The 2014 United Way ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained and Employed) Report shows that nearly one in two families are not making enough to cover basic of living expenses. Donations make a difference! Every $1 raised can help to provide up to three meals for a family in need, a $25 donation provides a Thanksgiving meal and $125 covers one week of workforce development training. The UP Centers accept advance Community Challenge Pledges throughout the year. These are announced on the air during the radiothon and challenge friends or colleagues to make matching contributions. Business often hold fundraising events throughout the year to generate their challenge pledge contributions. Sponsorship opportunities are available! Advance pledges can be made by contacting 772-468-8543 prior to the event or the day of the event by calling 855-YES-FOOD (937-3663). In 2016, this toll-free number is sponsored by Mr. Oil.
